Abstract
The colostomy has been recognized as an important procedure in the treatment and palliation of various colorectal diseases, but it has significant morbidity and mortality. There is a tendency to perform this procedure less frequently, because the
results of the primary closure or anastomosis in the colorectal injuries and diseases are relatively good.
Nevertheless, the number of case are somewhat increasing due to overall increase in the number of patients.
We evaluated 40 cases of colostomy treated in the department of surgery, Gyeong-Sang National University Hospital from Jan 15, 1987 to Agu 31, 1991.
@ES The results were as follow;
@EN 1) The peak incidence in age was 7 the decade(27.5%), and the male to female ratio was 1.4 : 1
2) The sigmoid-end colostomy was done in 32 patients(80%) and sigmoid-loop colostomy in 6 patients(15%), transveres-loop colostomy in 2 patients(5%).
3) The colorectal cancer (72.5%) was the most common disease for which colostomy was performed, the other disease were congenital megacolon(7.5%), imperforate anus and colon perforation(5%), anal fistula or periproctal abscess(5%).
4) There were 2 cases of complications in 40 patients(5%) of which the one was stomal necrosis, and the other was deformed stoma.
5) The mean hospital stays were 29.2 days in sigmoid end colostomy, 39.2 days in sigmoid-loop colostomy, 36 days in transverse-loop colostomy.
6) The mean intervals for the repair of colostomy were 200 days in sigmoid-loop colostomy, 225 days in tansverse-loop colostomy and 250 days in imperforate anus, 32 days in colon perforation, 143 days in congenital megacolon.
7) The mortality was 5%(2 cases) and the cause of death was sepsis(2 cases).
